What the New Hospital Means...
“The Center for Care and Discovery is the primary place where our impact as an institution will be felt in the city and around the world – in terms of breakthrough scientific discovery and advancing the welfare of humanity.”
Rigorous Study and Breakthrough Collaboration
The Center for Care and Discovery is across the street from the Gordon Center for Integrative Science and the Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery, two research buildings that unite scientists from the biological and physical sciences and house many of our top researchers. It joins together, within one of America’s great universities, a 21st-century biomedical campus in which clinicians and scientists productively collaborate. The unique concentration of technology and human brilliance in diverse fields, made possible by the addition of the new hospital facility to this campus, will attract the best minds to Chicago for generations to come. It is in such “hot spots” of collective talent where the future of medicine is being created.
At the front of this next wave of breakthroughs are visionary University of Chicago scientists and practitioners with a talent for bold thinking, working in an atmosphere of creative collaboration. Masters of the best practice of medicine, they are never satisfied with it. For them, the latest advance, even their own, is just the next step toward future innovation.
What will the new medicine emerging from this creative environment look like? No one can say for sure, but our researchers believe that major advances will be driven by discoveries in genomics and personalized medicine, so that prevention, diagnosis and treatment will all be finely tuned to patients’ individual genetic profiles. Interventions will be based on ever-advancing technologies. Our current vision encompasses a fundamental reinvention of instrumentation based on nanotechnology. It calls for a novel communications platform that will power clinical research and improve patient safety and outcomes.
