Sky Lobby: 7th Floor

The Sky Lobby features floor-to-ceiling glass walls, filling the space with natural light and providing panoramic views of the campus, Lake Michigan, Washington Park and downtown Chicago. The Sky Lobby houses central reception, family waiting areas, a chapel, the gift shop, dining areas and other public spaces.

Operating Room

Physicians and scientists in the new hospital are equipped with the most advanced diagnostic tools available, providing patients with targeted treatments and exceptional care.

Chapel

Tucked away on the 7th-floor Sky Lobby, the new hospital’s Chapel provides patients and their families with a peaceful space for solace or prayer.

Central Nurse Station

An integral part of our medical team, the new hospital’s nurses circulate from this central station.

A Focus on the Patient — and the Future

At left, a modular cube — or “bay” — that enables the building to adapt to changing structural and patient needs in the coming century. At right, a private inpatient room, representative of our commitment to providing clean, comfortable, safe environments for patients and their families.

The new hospital’s basic design is modular and spacious, essentially a framework of large boxes that will be transformed over time for new technologies and patient care modalities that will come to the forefront over its life span.

At the same time, the building provides a patient-centered environment that enables the best care. The physical plan for the new structure has been fine-tuned to address the psychosocial needs of patients and their families, to promote a healing atmosphere and enhance the effectiveness of advanced medicine.

“A hospital has not only the goal but the obligation to be inspirational. When you come as a patient, or with a family member, the experience of the architecture is something that has to give you not only hope but clarity, peace.”
